Rain Day Procedure

Agenda

8:00 – 8:30		Volunteers meet at Silver Spring campus for carpools and to put SAV supplies in vehicles.
9:30 – 10: 00		Arrive at CBEC Visitor Center (coffee, donuts). See map of area
10:00 – 10:30		Welcome remarks and review day's logistics (see photos)
10:30 – 10:55		Shuttle volunteers and supplies to activity sites
11:00 – 12:00		Restoration Activities Part I (3 separate activities during same time period):
		1. SAV Planting for volunteers involved with growing effort Volunteers will wade into water and plant grasses 3 people at a time (see photos). Number of volunteers: 55-70 2. Floating Dock Construction Volunteers will install 4-6 posts and attach interlocking floating dock pieces (see photos). Number of volunteers: 8 (currently filled) 3. Oyster Planting Using NCBO boat, volunteers will bring 25-50 bags of oyster shell bags and plant on reef (see photos). Number of volunteers: 6 (currently filled)
12:00 – 12:45		Bag Lunch and Terrapin Informational Session (30 minute break, on own). Informal discussion about terrapin protection (e.g. lifecycles, nest marking, etc.) hosted by the Terrapin Institute (see photos).
12:45 – 2:45		Cabin Creek Restoration Activities: (Rotate once after 1 hour, 2 activities, 40-45 volunteers for each station) 1. Wetland Plantings and Shoreline Stabilization Plant emergent marsh species to help stabilize and protect the shoreline (see photos). Also will install 2-3 coir fiberlogs (see photos). Number of volunteers: 40-45 2. Wetlands Clean-up Remove trash and debris from wetland area and clean up remaining damage from Hurricane Isabel (see photos). Number of volunteers: 40-45
3:00 - ?		Reception at nearby Harris Seafood Restaurant, food and beverages provided by ORP

Volunteer Supplies to Bring

Bagged lunch or snack(s) (we will provide some water but NOT food at CBEC)
Bottled water/drinks
Swimsuit and/or old clothes, you will get wet!! (Quick dry fabrics work best; we will have one tent that is tall enough to stand up in, for changing at Cabin Creek)
Fieldwork clothes that can get muddy and wet (shorts and t-shirts). Remember to wear your NOAA logos. Quick-dry fabrics are recommended (nylon, not cotton).
Old shoes/sneakers/Teva sandals that can get wet (NO BARE FEET ALLOWED!!) (Note: sediments are much firmer here than those at Otter Point Creek but you still need footwear to protect your feet)
Towel
Dry change of clothes and shoes
Plastic bag for your wet items
Waterproof sunscreen
Bug spray
Binoculars (optional – plenty of birding opportunities)
Sunglasses (optional)
Hat (optional)
Jacket/sweatshirt (if necessary)
Work gloves (optional – some will be provided)
Light weight/partial wet suit IF it's cold that day (you can use chest waders but some water may be too deep and bending is involved so they don't work as well)
Bag to hold your gear (backpack or dry bag). We will carpool to the planting site, since it has limited parking so plan on bringing all necessary items with you.
Be prepared, check the forecast before leaving your house in the morning!

The Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center (formerly called Horseheads Wetlands Center) is located on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, near Kent Narrows and the Bay Bridge.

Directions From Silver Spring, Washington, Baltimore, Annapolis (see Mapquest for more):

From the beltway (495), take exit for Maryland Route 50 (East)
Follow across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge ($2.50 toll)
Follow 50 (E) to exit 43B (Chester River Beach Road)
Turn right on Chester River Beach Road, then left on Route 18
Take the first right onto Perry Corner Road
The entrance to Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center is located about 1/2 mile on the right, and is clearly marked with a brown and white sign (may also be signs for Horseheads Wetlands Center)
Turn right at the sign onto a dirt road called Discovery Lane
Follow Discovery Lane (unpaved road) until it ends at the Visitor Center parking lot

Carpooling and Reserving NOAA Vehicles

Please contact the NOAA Motor Pool (301)713-1955 if you are interested in reserving one of the NOAA minivans or cars. NOTE: Both contractors and FEDS can reserve vehicles with a valid driver's license.

Rain Plan Procedure

Implementation of the rain contingency plan will be decided by 4:00pm the day before the event (Monday, June 14). This decision will be e-mailed to volunteers and available through a recorded message. Call (301)713-3000 x110 after 4:00 to check the event status NOTE: this event will only be postponed in the event of severe weather (e.g. thunderstorms), not for light rain or cold temperatures. The rain date has been scheduled for Thursday, June 17, 2004.
