Restoration Activities: Morning
Participants were pre-assigned to a team and conducted a variety of restoration activities in different areas of CBEC.
There will be 10 teams of 120 NOAA staff.

  • Activities at Prospect Bay (~25 people):
    Native oyster seeding, reef ball monitoring, bottom mapping demo via boat, phramite removal, and shoreline cleanup.
  • Activities near the Visitor Center (~50 people):
    Wetland planting, staining a gazebo, NGS elevation project, and a raptor rehab tour.
  • Activities near Hog Bay (~16 people):
    Fish seining offshore.
  • Activities near Marshy Creek (~35 people):
    Bird census, underwater grass inventory and planting underwater grasses grown in NOAA tanks.

Bag Lunch (bring your own food & drink! Coolers and limited water will be provided)

    Fish sampling from a block net.
  • Activities near Marshy Creek (~35 people):
    Fish trawl via noaa vessel (mullet skiff) and underwater grass inventory.

Volunteer Supplies to Wear & Bring

  • Download Volunteer Supply List

  • Bagged lunch or snack(s). Limited bottled water will be provided.
  • Bottled water/drinks
  • Swimsuit and/or old clothes, you will get wet!! (Quick dry fabrics work best; we will have two tents for changing into dry clothes).
  • bootsFieldwork clothes that can get muddy and wet (shorts and t-shirts). Remember to wear your NOAA logos.
  • Old shoes/sneakers/Teva sandals or dive booties that can get wet (BARE FEET NOT ALLOWED!!)
  • Towel
  • Dry change of clothes and shoes
  • Plastic bag for your wet items
  • Waterproof sunscreen
  • Bug spray
  • Binoculars (optional)
  • Sunglasses (optional)
  • Hat (optional)
  • Jacket/sweatshirt (optional, if necessary)
  • Work gloves (optional – some will be provided)
  • Light weight/partial wet suit if it's cold that day (or chest waders)
  • Bag to hold your gear (backpack or dry bag). Plan on bringing all necessary items along with you.
  • Be prepared, check the forecast before leaving your house in the morning!

Directions

We are meeting at the CBEC Visitor Center located on Maryland’s Eastern Shore near Kent Narrows and the Bay Bridge. Arrive by 9:00 AM on Tuesday, June 12, 2007. Carpooling is strongly encouraged.

Directions from Silver Spring, Annapolis, Baltimore and Washington:

  • Take I-495 (E) towards College Park
  • Take US Route 50 (E) towards Annapolis
  • Cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge (Maryland Route 50 East) to exit 43B (Chester River Beach Road).
  • Turn right on Chester River Beach Road, then left on Route 18.
  • Take the first right onto Perry’s Corner Road.
  • The entrance to Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center is located about ½ mile on the right and is clearly marked with an entrance sign.
  • Turn right at the sign onto a dirt road called Discovery Lane.
  • Follow Discovery Lane until it ends at the Visitor Center parking lot.

Carpooling and Reserving NOAA Vehicles

  • Please carpool, there is limited space for parking.
  • NOAA employees in Silver Spring should contact Calvin at the NOAA Motor Pool (301)713-1955 or e-mail Dispatch.pool@noaa.gov directly if you would like to use one of the limited numbers of minivans or cars from the NOAA Motor Pool.
  • The motor pool is located in SSMC 4, 8th Floor.
  • NOTE: Both contractors and FEDS can reserve vehicles with a valid driver's license.

Directions for Disassembling and Transporting Bay Grass Systems

It is best to keep the grasses submerged in the black tub until you are ready to transport them to Restoration Day, but they are fine overnight without power, light and/or the pump running if you choose to disassemble the system.

1.  Turn off the power to your system.
2.  Carefully remove the heater, pump, thermometer, and disassemble the lamps: 

    • sav trays in boatDry them off and place return back into their boxes.
    • It is best to wrap the thermometer in paper-towel and place in a Ziploc bag.
    • Please discard the sponge filter and the light bulbs.

3.  Remove the trays with grasses from the black tub.
4.  Place either wet newspaper or paper towel over the grasses in their trays. 
5.  Discard the water in the large black tub. 
6.  Wipe the tub out with a paper towel or dry towel.  Do NOT use soap.
7.  It is best to transport the grass trays in the black tub for stability in your vehicle:

    • Place trays in your car (in the black tub) and make sure the grasses stay covered in the moist paper for the drive. 
    • Please do not stack the trays, it will crush your grasses

Remember to return all of your equipment and boxes at Restoration Day.
