NOAA Restoration Day:
2006 Tanks

""

nesdis tankIn 2006, 17 SAV grow tanks were distributed among the Silver Spring NOAA offices listed below. Twenty-three tanks were distributed from Silver Spring in 2006; along with the 17 NOAA tanks, 3 tanks are being sponsored by local schools, and 3 tanks have been distributed to other external groups such as congressional staff and an Eagle Scout group. The Virginia effort distributed an additional 19 tank set-ups , bringing the overall number of set-ups to 42!

Tank supplies were distributed during the bay grass workshop on March 23. Most offices set-up their tanks around March 23 or 24. Plants grow for approximately 2 months, until they are planted during NOAA Restoration Day in June. The buds from which the grasses are grown were donated to the project by Dr. Steven Ailstock of the Environmental Center at Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, MD. They are very hard to obtain commercially.

In 2006, two species of bay grass will be grown by all of the 23 Maryland set-ups: Redhead Grass (Potamogeton perfoliatus) and Widgeon Grass (Ruppia maritima). The Virginia tanks will grow Wild Celery (Vallisneria Americana).
