The following images were taken during the past two NOAA Restoration Days and throughout the NOAA bay grass growing and planting initiative which began in 2002. This archive dates from 2002 - 2006.
Note: Years are organized in reverse chronologic order -- most recent year first with photos shown sequentially within the year to most accurately represent the growing and planting sequence (i.e. starting with setting up the tanks and ending with the planting day).

NOAA Restoration Day Activities -- Maryland Event: June 13, 2006
Third annual NOAA Restoration Day event at the Trent Hall Restoration Site in MD.

Welcome Remarks - Speakers included: Dick Myers, Senator Mikulski’s staffer; Garry Mayer, Deputy, NMFS Office ofHabitat Conservation; Craig McLean, Deputy AA NOS (Acting); and, Tim Keeney, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Oceans and Atmosphere.
- Fish Seining - Six species of fish were identified at the beach site during the fish seining activity including Silverside, Bay Anchovy, White Perch, and Blue Crab.
- Beach Planting - About 30 volunteers planted 500 Spartina alterniflora marsh plants at the beach site (two teams of 15 each).
- Underwater Bay Grass Planting by NOAA Staff - Approximately 20 NOAA volunteers planted 50 trays of widgeon and redhead underwater Bay grasses grown in 17 systems throughout NOAA's Silver Spring, MD campus.
- Underwater Bay Grass Planting by School Students - Fourteen students and teachers planted 6 trays of widgeon and redhead underwater Bay grasses grown in 2 systems in their classrooms (4th, 5th, and 6th graders from Congressional Schools of Virginia and Sligo Elementary School).
Water Quality Testing - Approximately fifteen volunteers helped to test the water quality near the dock. Salinity was 12.6 ppt and water clarity was good for this site and time of year; Secchi depth was 0.9 meters.
- Oyster Restoration - Rich Takacs, RC guided approximately fifteen volunteers in seeding an existing off-shore oyster reef with 100 bags (approximately 250,000 oysterspat) of native oysters.
- Bottom Mapping &
Bird Identification - Two NOAA vessels provided coastal bottom mapping and habitat characterization demonstrations In addition, a team of ten volunteers identified 56 bird species (135 individuals).
- CO-OPS Presentation - A team from NOS/Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS) provided a poster presentation explaining what CO-OPS does related to tide stations and water level analysis, focusing on habitat mapping in the Chesapeake Bay.
NGS Elevation Demo - Galen Scott and his team from NOS's Nationanl Geodetic Survey (NGS) provided a demo to explain three methods for creating elevation contours used for coastal mapping.
- Sampling Invertebrates - Bruce Moravchik, NOS/CED led over 25 volunteers in finding eleven taxanomic groups of macro-invertebrates (46 individuals) near the created marsh area.
- Monitoring Plant Survival - Walter Priest, NCBO and about fifty participants monitored the survival of wetland plants previously planted in the six acres of created marsh.
- Planting Marsh Buffer - Approximately fifty volunteers planted 900 switch grass plugs and 200 marsh shrubs as a buffer around the six acres of the newly created marsh area. Megan Forbes, ORR and Jason Rolfe, ORR led this activity.
