NOAA Restoration Day Activities -- Virginia Event: June 12, 2007 The second Virginia initiative, expanding upon Maryland's on-going event, was coordinated by the Virginia NOAA Chesapeake Bay office. This event was done in partnership with the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), the US Fish and Wildlife, and Harrison Lake National Fish Hatchery. Other 2007 Site Visits to Jug Bay: 2006 Photos
On Tuesday, June 13, more than 100 volunteers from all NOAA Line Offices joined students from Congressional Schools of Virginia, and Sligo Elementary School to restore the Chesapeake Bay as part of the third annual NOAA Restoration Day event. Participants planted underwater bay grasses (grown in 17-NOAA offices and three at local schools), stabilized the shoreline with native plants, seeded an offshore oyster reef, monitored water quality, sampled fish and invertebrates, and included demos of innovative restoration techniques by NGS and CO-OPS. The activities were part of the Chalk Point oil spill restoration effort and took place in Trent Hall, MD.

On Tuesday, June 14, 2005, over 100 NOAA staff joined personnel from the U.S. Navy and St. Mary’s College to restore a portion of the Chesapeake Bay shoreline during the second annual NOAA Restoration Day event at the Navy’s Webster Field Annex, in St. Mary’s County, MD. Participants planted 54 trays of underwater grasses previously grown in NOAA offices in Silver Spring. They also installed 5,400 wetlands plants, distributed 100 bags of native oysters, and removed invasive species from the water’s edge. All together these projects will help restore more than 1,000 feet of highly eroding shoreline. The staff-led effort (administered by a team from Restoration Center, NCBO and NOS Special Projects Office), supplements an existing restoration project at the Navy site supported by NOAA’s Community-based Restoration program.

On Tuesday, June 15, over 90 Silver Spring NOAA volunteers waded out into warm, murky water in the Chesapeake Bay getting wet up to their necks while planting underwater bay grasses that they had grown in their offices. This was the first NOAA Restoration Day event, an opportunity for NOAA employees to work together to make a difference through a variety of hands-on, in-the-field restoration activities. Besides planting underwater grasses, volunteers participated in four other activities including wetland planting and the installation of biologs for shoreline stabilization, offshore oyster restoration, dock construction, and a shoreline cleanup. All activities aimed to help improve habitat and water quality of the Chesapeake Bay, a local treasure that is severely degraded due to human impacts.
